Those jobs that did not require deep skills are slowly being replaced by machines. So the number of jobs a person could once get with only minimal education is quickly being depleted. For those who want to keep working, learning how to operate basic machinery is no longer a viable option. Instead, you must put yourself on the other end and learn how to operate the machinery from a vantage point in the cyber world. As an example, look at the list below and see what is happening with many of the jobs many of us have come to rely on. 

• In the last decade of the 1900s, more than 1.8 million manufacturing jobs vanished, while productivity in those same companies increased by 35%. 
• In the European Union, there were so many people unemployed that if they were all put in a single line, it would reach halfway around the globe. 
• Today, only 17% of the world’s workforce is in blue-collar manufacturing and only 2% actually still work in agriculture. 
• Three to four jobs are lost for every new automated robot brought online. According to The Financial Times of London, there will be four times more robotic workers introduced into the business world within the next decade.  
• In less than ten years, more than half the textile workers in the United States and in Western Europe were replaced by computerized systems.  
• 60% of mine workers and 50% of steelworker jobs have already disappeared, and 30% of the world’s tire makers were replaced by automation all within less than a decade. 
Over the years, major industry leaders have been forced to make huge changes in how they do business simply because of the rush of new technology being introduced. Companies that were once well-established such as General Electric, Kodak, and Xerox have been forced to downsize, letting go hundreds of thousands of employees. It may seem like such drastic measures would ring the death knell over these companies. But the reality is that by switching to automation, many of them have tripled their sales and productivity in the process.  

No one knows exactly when or even if this downward spiral is going to come to an end, but there is only one thing we all can be sure of. Those whose jobs will last the longest will be those who are on the opposite end of the spectrum, those who are quick to learn new skills, master new talents, and will be able to change horses in the middle of the stream.  

There is no way to predict exactly where this new trend is taking us but we can be assured that as long as we can keep learning new things, we will be in a better position to stake a claim on whatever new industry is coming down the line and we can be the first in line to take advantage of it. So, when the question is asked, who needs to learn faster, the answer should be obvious - All of us.
